So today was the day, our first experience with the delicacy that is cuy. I have to say, guinea pig is not bad. We were served lunch and didn´t know what it was. We thought it may be leftover duck from yesterday, but no, it was cuy. Ana told us she tried to get the 3 fugitive cuy that had broken out of the kitchen area and now live in the yard but they sensed their doom and hid under a table/dresser thing. So she had to pick four from inside the cooking shed. The meat is dark and very tasty. It is a bit salty but not tough at all.
Unfortunately my stomach hurts now, but I don´t think it was the cuy. I think it just happens to be the effects of 3 meals in Cusco that were heavy on vegetables and fruits. Keri and I have been lucky that we aren´t suffering major stomach problems. My SteriPen must be doing its job well.
Although, we came home from the clinic today for lunch and I went to the bathroom. As I turned on the tap to wash my hands, nothing came out. The whole town did not have water for about 5 hours today! We had to use a bucket and get water out of the small channel that runs in front of our house and pour that into the toilet to flush. You know you live in a rural area when the water just stops working for no reason or suddenly you don´t have electricity for hours. It isn´t because of the weather. Who knows!

ReplyDeleteAll I can think of when you say "cuy" is that movie with the animated guinea pigs! I'm sure cuy will be in my future as well.
